Massage Chair Repair | How to Fix 9 Common Problems (and When to Call Support)

Most massage chair repair jobs come down to a blown fuse, a loose cable, a setting you didn't mean to change or tired faux leather. You can check all four in under 20 minutes without opening the chair. Anything deeper is a warranty job. Start with the five tools that solve the common fixes:

The 5-Item Massage Chair Fix-It Kit

#1 Start Here 1 Klein Tools RT210 outlet tester for checking a massage chair outlet
Klein Tools RT210 Outlet Tester 4.8 For: a chair that won't turn on

Why it's #1: a dead outlet or tripped GFCI looks exactly like a dead chair. This plug-in tester tells you in seconds whether the problem is your wall or your chair, before you touch a fuse or call support. It holds 4.8 stars across nearly 9,000 ratings.

#2 Protect It 2 TESSAN single outlet wall surge protector for a massage chair
TESSAN Single-Outlet Wall Surge Protector 4.7 For: power surges warranties won't cover

Why it's #2: Titan and Infinity both exclude power surges from their warranties. This plugs straight into the wall, so it's not an extension cord, and its listing names massage chairs among the appliances it's rated for (1,875 W max).

3 ONine self-adhesive leather repair tape for peeling massage chair upholstery
ONine Leather Repair Tape 4.3 For: peeling or torn faux leather
4 COCONIX leather and vinyl repair kit with color compounds
COCONIX Leather & Vinyl Repair Kit 4.1 For: cracks, scuffs and small holes
5 TONINT XL waterproof massage chair cover
TONINT Massage Chair Cover XL 4.5 For: sun, dust and pet damage
Quick Answer

To repair a massage chair, start with the free checks: confirm the outlet works, flip the chair's main power switch off and on, check the fuse near the power input, and reseat the cables between the footrest and the base. Titan's own support pages start with the fuse and the footrest connections, too. Fix peeling faux leather yourself with a repair patch or kit. For noisy rollers, error codes that won't clear or a fuse that keeps blowing, stop using the chair and contact the manufacturer, because unauthorized repairs can void the warranty.

4 Rules Before You Start Any Massage Chair Repair

  1. Unplug it first. Titan's fuse guide starts by unplugging the chair from the wall and switching the power off so there's no power running into it. Do the same before checking cables, cleaning or moving the chair.
  2. Don't open the covers. Titan, Luraco and KoziSense all exclude unauthorized repairs or modifications from their warranties, and Infinity requires repairs by its authorized technicians. Fuse swaps and cable checks are fine; taking panels off is not.
  3. Record the problem today. Some brands set short reporting windows. iBooMas asks owners to report a defect within 3 days, and Real Relax within 14 days, with photos or video.
  4. Plug straight into the wall. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says extension cords "should only be used temporarily" and can overheat when overloaded. A massage chair runs every day, so give it a dedicated wall outlet.
Stop and unplug immediately if you notice
  • A burning smell, smoke, sparks or a hot plug
  • A fuse that blows again right after you replace it
  • Grinding or metal-on-metal noise from the backrest
  • Exposed wiring or a damaged power cord

These point to a fault inside the chair. Leave it unplugged and contact the manufacturer.

Why Won't My Massage Chair Turn On?

Short answer: it's usually the outlet, the main power switch or the fuse. Full-body chairs such as Titan's have a separate power switch beside the power input at the back of the base, and the remote does nothing until that switch is on.

Titan's warranty FAQ says the first step is to check the fuse on the back of the chair. Its fuse guide places it at the back bottom of the chair, between the power input and the switch, and lists a 5 × 20 mm, 125 V, 5 A fuse for its models. Titan also says every chair ships with a spare fuse in the manual packet. Other brands use different fuses, so match the rating printed in your manual.

Try first (2 min)
  • Test the outlet with a plug-in tester or a lamp
  • Reset a tripped GFCI outlet or breaker
  • Flip the chair's main power switch off and on
  • Push the power cord firmly into the chair
Then (10 min)
  • Unplug the chair and switch it off
  • Open the fuse holder and look for a broken filament
  • Replace it with the spare of the same rating
  • Plug straight into a wall outlet, not a power strip
Call support if
  • The new fuse blows again
  • The outlet tests fine but the chair stays dead
  • You smell burning or see damage

Massage Chair Stuck Reclined or Won't Return Upright?

Short answer: power-cycle it and check for obstructions and loose footrest connections before calling support. It's one of the most common complaints in the owner data we analyzed: 16 of 37 recline mentions on the RELX Mars Pro 4D are negative, and MYTHIA 4D owners report chairs that don't return upright.

The recline and leg rest are motor-driven, so don't force the backrest by hand. Titan notes that its chairs use cables between the footrest and the base, one of which carries the footrest air hose, and that all of them must be properly connected. A loose connection is one cause worth ruling out before you assume a motor failure.

Try first (2 min)
  • Press the power or stop button and wait a minute
  • Remove anything caught behind the backrest or under the leg rest
  • Turn the main switch off, unplug for a minute, then restart
Then (10 min)
  • Unplug and check the cables between the footrest and base
  • Line up the connector marks and reseat them firmly
  • Check the manual for a manual or emergency return function
Call support if
  • Motors hum but nothing moves
  • A connector pin looks bent or broken (Titan treats this as a warranty claim)
  • It happens again after a restart

Massage Chair Airbags Not Inflating?

Short answer: check the airbag intensity setting, then the air hose connection at the footrest. On many chairs, airbag pressure has its own setting. Infinity, for example, says owners can adjust it in each chair's manual settings, and it's easy to turn it to the lowest level by accident. A chair that suddenly can't squeeze your legs often has a loose footrest connection, which is where Titan routes one of its air hose links.

Try first (2 min)
  • Raise airbag intensity in manual mode
  • Make sure the airbag function or zone is turned on
  • Try an auto program that uses airbags
Then (10 min)
  • Unplug and reseat the footrest connections
  • Listen for the air pump when airbags should run
  • Feel for air escaping from a seam or hose
Call support if
  • The pump runs but nothing inflates (a likely leak)
  • The pump is silent
  • The pump is unusually loud

Some noise is part of the design: BOSSCARE 4D owners specifically mention a loud air compressor. A change in the sound, rather than the sound itself, is what to report.

Massage Chair Rollers Weak, Stuck or Noisy?

Short answer: weak or uneven rollers are usually a settings or fit issue; grinding, clicking that wasn't there before, or rollers stuck in one spot are mechanical and belong with support. Start by sitting all the way back and rerunning the body scan, since chairs with shoulder detection set the roller path from where you sit. Then check the intensity level and any back pad. Real Relax, for example, includes a back pad on its Favor-06 to fine-tune roller pressure.

If the massage feels too hard rather than too weak, Infinity attributes discomfort mostly to overuse or a too-high intensity, so lower it or add the pad before suspecting a fault.

Try first (2 min)
  • Sit fully back and restart the body scan
  • Raise or lower roller intensity and width
  • Add or remove the back cushion
Then (10 min)
  • Try a different auto program
  • Power-cycle the chair
  • Note when the noise happens (start, one spot, constantly)
Call support if
  • You hear grinding or new clicking
  • The rollers stop mid-track or stick in one spot
  • One side works and the other doesn't

Massage Chair Heat Not Working?

Short answer: make sure heat is switched on, then give it a full session, because many chairs deliver gentle warmth through the upholstery rather than a hot pad. In our owner data, 9 of 29 heat mentions on the KoziSense A18 are negative, mostly saying the warmth isn't noticeable at first. On the MassaMAX MT339, 8 of 20 heat mentions are negative, split between "barely noticeable" and "not working."

Try first (2 min)
  • Turn heat on (some programs switch it off)
  • Check which zones heat: lumbar, calves or feet
  • Remove thick throws between you and the pad
Then (15 min)
  • Run a full session with heat on and feel the zone
  • Check the manual for heat levels
  • Power-cycle the chair
Call support if
  • The zone stays cold after a full session
  • Heat worked before and suddenly stopped
  • The heat feels too hot or smells hot

Massage Chair Remote, App or Bluetooth Not Working?

Short answer: reseat the controller cable, restart the chair and re-pair Bluetooth. Real Relax says its chairs enter pairing mode as soon as they're turned on, and its Bluetooth guide suggests entering the code 9999 if your phone asks for one. It also suggests turning Bluetooth off on both devices and pairing again, switching off Bluetooth on nearby devices to cut interference, and updating your phone, since outdated software can cause connection problems.

Be gentle with the controller. Human Touch says to clean it with a dry cloth only, and warranties often exclude remote damage: Infinity excludes dropped remotes and Luraco excludes cracked remote screens.

Try first (2 min)
  • Check that the chair's main switch is on
  • Unplug and firmly reconnect the remote cable
  • Restart the chair
Then (10 min)
  • Forget the chair in your phone's Bluetooth list and re-pair
  • Turn off Bluetooth on nearby devices
  • Update the chair's app and your phone
Call support if
  • The screen stays blank with power on
  • Buttons respond only some of the time
  • The cable or plug is damaged

What Do Massage Chair Error Codes Mean?

Short answer: error codes are model-specific, so the same number can mean different things on different brands. Titan's common error codes page is a good example: it says Error 68 is most common on its Hiro chairs, and its FAQ explains that Error 68 means the footrest and the base aren't properly connected. It lists Error 00 as most common on its Soho chairs.

Whatever the brand, photograph the code, note the model and serial number, power-cycle the chair once and look the code up in your manual. If it comes back, send the photo to support; it speeds up the claim.

How Do You Fix Peeling Massage Chair Leather?

Short answer: patch it with a self-adhesive leather repair tape or fill it with a leather and vinyl repair kit, then change how you clean the chair. Most massage chairs use PU (faux) leather, and warranties often don't cover it. KoziSense, for example, excludes "normal wear and tear of PU leather," so this is usually a do-it-yourself job.

Prevention matters more than repair. Titan's cleaning guide says to avoid alcohol, bleach, benzine, thinners and abrasive cleaners, not to use heat to dry surfaces, and to cover exposed areas to prevent fading. Infinity adds that a synthetic-leather conditioner rehydrates the surface after cleaning. Our guide on how to clean a massage chair walks through a safe routine.

Small peel or tear
  • Clean and dry the area
  • Trim loose flakes
  • Cut a patch with rounded corners and press it on
Cracks or scuffs
  • Use a color-matched repair compound
  • Apply thin layers and let each one dry
  • Condition the surrounding area
Large areas
  • Ask the brand about replacement covers
  • Cover the chair when it's not in use
  • Keep it out of direct sun

Why Does My Massage Chair Shut Off Mid-Session?

Short answer: usually because the session timer ran out. Most chairs end each program automatically, and many let you set the length. Real Relax lists 10- to 30-minute sessions on its 2026 SL-Track, and one FURNIMAT 3D owner notes a 15-minute default you can extend to 30. Human Touch recommends 15 to 30 minutes per session, up to once or twice a day, so short timers are deliberate. Our guide on how long to use a massage chair covers safe session lengths.

If the chair cuts out after a minute or two, or the lights go off entirely, treat it as a power problem: test the outlet, move off any extension cord and check the fuse as described above.

What Actually Breaks? Owner Data From Popular Chairs

To see what fails in real homes, we looked at Amazon's review summaries for 20 popular full-body chairs. Those summaries count how many reviews mention a topic and whether each mention is positive or negative. These were the clearest problem areas:

ChairProblem AreaNegative MentionsWhat Owners Report
Real Relax Favor-06 3DDurability31 of 45Some chairs failed after about two months
RELX Mars Pro 4DRecline16 of 37Getting stuck reclined; some need a neck pillow
Human Touch WholeBody 7.1Durability17 of 26Some report it breaking after three months
MYTHIA 4DAdjustability13 of 24Chair not returning upright
BOSSCARE 4DFunction / noise12 of 24 / 6 of 8Stopping after about four months; loud air compressor
MassaMAX MT339 4DHeating8 of 20Heat barely noticeable or not working
Titan Rejuv 4DFunctionality3 of 9Footrest and heating-pad faults

Two patterns stand out. Moving parts that carry your weight, the recline and footrest, cause the most frustration. And electronics problems tend to show up within the first few months, which is why the first-year warranty, when repairs are usually free, matters most. See how each brand handles that in our best massage chair brands ranking.

How to File a Massage Chair Warranty Claim

Most "3-year" warranties include just one year of free repairs. After that, parts are covered but labor or shipping usually isn't. Here's what the main Amazon brands' official terms say:

BrandYear 1After Year 1Claim Notes
KoziSenseFree repairParts only, years 2–3Works with technicians across the U.S.; PU leather wear excluded
RELXFree repairParts only (no labor), years 2–33-year limited warranty
iBooMasFree serviceSmall parts and shipping charge, years 2–3Report within 3 days with photos or video
Osaki / TitanParts and laborParts in year 2; frame 3 years on selected modelsCheck the fuse first; unauthorized repairs excluded
Real RelaxFree partsNot coveredYou pay shipping both ways; report within 14 days
Human Touch (WholeBody)Parts and laborParts in year 2; structure 3 years3-year limited tier
  1. Gather the basics: model name, serial number (usually on a label at the back or base), order number and purchase date.
  2. Document the fault: a short video showing the problem and any error code, plus photos of connectors you checked.
  3. Note what you've tried: outlet test, fuse, power-cycle and cable checks. Brands such as Luraco may ask you to troubleshoot by phone first.
  4. Ask who pays for what: labor, parts and shipping in your warranty year. Luraco says you may be charged for a service call if the technician finds no problem.
  5. Keep everything in writing: email or ticket replies, not just phone calls.

Should You Repair or Replace a Massage Chair?

Repair it if

It's under warranty, the fault is a fuse, cable, remote or upholstery, or the brand still sells parts for your model.

Replace it if

The warranty has ended and the quote is for the mechanism or main board, parts are discontinued, or the same fault keeps coming back.

Our rule of thumb: if an out-of-warranty repair quote approaches half the cost of a comparable new chair, put that money toward a new one with a stronger warranty. Our best massage chairs guide and best massage chairs under $1,000 list current picks, and our guide to moving a massage chair helps if you're hauling an old one out.

The Fix-It Kit, Explained

Klein Tools RT210 GFCI outlet tester

1. Klein Tools RT210 Outlet Tester

Use it for: a chair that won't power on

Plug it into the chair's outlet and its lights show whether the outlet is wired correctly and live. It works on standard 3-wire 110/125 V outlets and tests GFCI outlets, the kind often found in kitchens, bathrooms and basements. It rates 4.8 stars across 8,978 ratings, with 0% one-star reviews. Owners call it simple and useful, though a few say theirs stopped working after months.

TESSAN single outlet wall surge protector

2. TESSAN Single-Outlet Wall Surge Protector

Use it for: storm and surge protection

This compact unit plugs directly into the wall and gives your chair one protected outlet, rated at 1,050 joules and 1,875 W, with an indicator light that shows protection is active. TESSAN lists massage chairs among the appliances it suits. It holds 4.7 stars across 289 ratings, and owners like that it doesn't block the second outlet.

ONine self-adhesive leather repair tape

3. ONine Leather Repair Tape

Use it for: peels, tears and pet scratches

A self-adhesive faux leather patch that needs no heat, tools or stitching: cut it to size and press it on. ONine offers more than 20 colors and says it works on vinyl and faux leather. With nearly 41,000 ratings at 4.3 stars, owners say it makes furniture look new again, though adhesion is mixed for some, so clean the area well first.

COCONIX leather and vinyl repair kit

4. COCONIX Leather & Vinyl Repair Kit

Use it for: cracks, scuffs and small holes

Instead of covering damage, this kit fills it. You mix color compounds to match your upholstery and apply them in thin layers, and COCONIX says the result stays flexible. It holds 4.1 stars across 26,500 ratings. Owners find it easy for minor repairs, but color matching takes patience and some repairs wear over time.

TONINT XL massage chair cover

5. TONINT Massage Chair Cover XL

Use it for: preventing sun, dust and pet damage

A waterproof, zippered cover sized at about 63 × 39.5 × 55 inches, which fits most full-body chairs. Covering the chair follows Titan's advice to protect exposed areas from fading. It rates 4.5 stars across 706 ratings, and owners say it keeps pets and dust off, though several find the fabric thin.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reset my massage chair?

Turn the chair off with the remote, switch off the main power switch at the back of the base, unplug it for about a minute, then plug it back in and switch it on. This clears many temporary glitches, such as a frozen remote or a program that stopped partway. If your chair has a specific reset sequence, it will be in the manual, and repeated freezes are worth reporting to support.

Where is the fuse on a massage chair?

On most full-body chairs it's at the back of the base, near the power socket. Titan, for example, places it at the back bottom of the chair between the power input and the switch, and ships a spare fuse in the manual packet. Always unplug the chair first and replace the fuse with one of the exact rating printed in your manual.

Does fixing my own massage chair void the warranty?

Basic checks such as testing the outlet, swapping a fuse or reseating cables are normal troubleshooting. Opening panels or modifying the chair is different: Titan, Luraco and KoziSense exclude unauthorized repairs or modifications, and Infinity requires its authorized technicians. If you're unsure whether a step is allowed, ask support before you do it and keep their reply in writing.

Why is my massage chair making noise?

Some sound is normal, such as the hum of motors and the air pump filling the airbags, and some models have loud compressors by design. New clicking, grinding or knocking from the backrest is different: it can mean a problem with the roller mechanism. Stop using the chair, note when the noise happens, record a short video and contact the manufacturer.

Can I fix peeling massage chair leather myself?

Yes. Small peels and tears can be covered with self-adhesive leather repair tape, and cracks or scuffs can be filled with a color-matched leather and vinyl repair kit. Warranties often exclude normal PU leather wear, so DIY is usually the practical route. To slow further damage, avoid alcohol, bleach and solvent cleaners, keep the chair out of direct sun and cover it when not in use.

Is it worth repairing an old massage chair?

It's worth repairing when the fix is simple, such as a fuse, cable, remote or upholstery, or when the chair is still under warranty. It's rarely worth it when the warranty has ended and the problem is the main mechanism or circuit board, or when parts are discontinued. As a rule of thumb, if the quote nears half the cost of a comparable new chair, replace it.

The Bottom Line on Massage Chair Repair

Your Repair Checklist

1. Power: test the outlet, flip the main switch, check the fuse.
2. Connections: unplug, then reseat the remote and footrest cables.
3. Settings: rerun the body scan, then check intensity, airbags and heat.
4. Upholstery: patch or fill faux leather, and change your cleaner.
5. Everything else: record it, stop using the chair and file a warranty claim.

Most massage chair problems feel serious and turn out to be small. Work through the free checks first, keep the chair on its own wall outlet, and report anything mechanical early, while year-one repairs are still free. If you're shopping for a replacement, our massage chair myths vs facts guide is a good place to reset expectations.
